Which Japanese motifs can I pick?+
Twelve: cherry blossom, a koi pond, a red-crowned crane, Mount Fuji, the great wave, a bamboo grove, autumn maples, plum blossom and moon, a torii over the sea, a lantern street at dusk, snow on pine, and a tea still life. You pick one, so the whole card is built around it instead of a little of everything.
Which Japanese art styles does it paint in?+
Three. Woodblock print, inspired by ukiyo-e and the Hokusai and Hiroshige tradition: flat color planes and bold clean outlines. Ink wash, inspired by sumi-e: black ink on cream paper with a few decisive strokes. Gold screen, inspired by the gold-leaf folding screens: a burnished gold ground with drifting clouds. Woodblock is the default.
Is the card printable?+
Yes, every card is a free printable. The image saves straight from the page, and the print-ready PDF that folds into a real card comes by email: one letter sheet, art on the front, the inside left blank so you can write your message by hand. The print guide covers paper and printer settings.
Will there be Japanese writing on the card?+
No. The only writing on the card is the message you type, in English, on a clean band along the bottom, or nothing at all if you choose No text. We keep kanji, seals, and calligraphy off the artwork on purpose: AI still gets Japanese characters wrong, and a wrong stroke turns a beautiful card into an embarrassing one. The phrases on this page are for writing inside the card by hand.
Is this made by a Japanese printmaker?+
No, and we say so plainly. These cards are made by AI in the spirit of the woodblock, ink wash, and gold screen traditions, painted fresh around the motif you pick. If you want the real thing, buy a print from a working Japanese printmaker. If you want a one-of-one card in about three minutes, this is the page.
Can I add a photo?+
Not on this page yet. These cards are painted from scratch with no photo, which is what keeps them looking like prints instead of filters. If you want their face on the card, the photo pages do that: turn a photo into a birthday card, or the flower and butterfly pages.
